If you entered Thailand on visa exemption or a Tourist Visa (TR), you can often apply for a 30-day extension at a provincial immigration office using form TM.7. This grants a new permission stamped in your passport — it is not an automatic extra month and not every entry qualifies.
Who can extend
Typical eligible cases include many 60-day exemption and TR entries where the officer agrees a tourist extension is appropriate. You must apply before the current stamp expires.
Not eligible examples (common — confirm locally):
- Entries already extended once when only one extension is allowed
- Certain visa types that require a different extension category
- Stamps marked with conditions prohibiting extension
Overstaying while you “plan to extend tomorrow” is still an overstay. File while the stamp is valid.
Warning
Bangkok immigration offices (Chaeng Watthana, IT Square Lak Si, etc.) handle high volume. Provincial offices can be faster but may interpret edge cases differently. Choose the office that matches your registered address where rules require it.
Typical fee
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TM.7 extension | 1,900 THB | Cash; tourist / exemption cases at time of writing |
| Passport photos | 100–200 THB | Often available near the office |
| Overstay fine (if late) | 500 THB/day | Guideline cap 20,000 THB — use calculator below |
Procedure
- 1
Confirm the stamp can be extended
Read the current Immigration notice or call the office. Some land-border entries receive shorter stays with different extension rules.
- 2
Prepare TM.7 and copies
Download TM.7, attach a 4×6 cm photo, copy passport biodata and latest stamp pages. Some offices want copy service on-site.
- 3
Obtain TM.30 if required
Many offices still ask for the address notification receipt. See TM.30 guide.
- 4
File in person early
Queues form before opening at popular offices. Dress respectfully; phones may be restricted in inner rooms.
- 5
Collect passport with new stamp
Same-day return is common, not guaranteed. Verify the new expiry date before you leave the counter.
Documents
Take to Immigration
- Passport original
- TM.7 form completed and signed
- Passport photograph to office specification
- 1,900 THB cash (exact change helps at busy counters)
- TM.30 receipt if the office asks
- Proof of onward travel rarely required for tourist extension but carry if you have it
What to expect on the day
Officers may ask your purpose, accommodation, and funds in plain language. Answer consistently with your TM.30 address. Biometrics and photos are routine at central offices.
Holiday closures: Thai public holidays and royal ceremony days close immigration nationally. Do not schedule extension on the last valid day of your stamp if a holiday follows.
After the extension
Photograph the new stamp immediately. Reset your calendar from the new expiry date. If you hold a long-stay permission later, 90-day reporting may apply — tourist extensions usually do not trigger TM.47, but confirm if your situation changes.

Stamp dates, visa conditions, and extension approvals vary. Always check your passport stamp, 90-day reporting obligations, and official immigration records.
If the stamp has already expired
Go to Immigration promptly. Fines follow the widely cited 500 THB per day guideline with a 20,000 THB cap per incident — detention and re-entry bans are separate risks not captured in calculators.

Overstay Fine Calculator
Estimate the immigration overstay penalty based on days overstayed and visa type.
Immigration penalties depend on individual circumstances, voluntary surrender, and current Thai law. This calculator uses the commonly cited 500 THB/day fine with a 20,000 THB cap. Overstays may also result in detention, deportation, or re-entry bans not reflected here.
Do not pay unofficial “fixers” at the gate. Use the official counter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extend twice?
Usually one 30-day tourist extension per eligible entry cycle. Further stay requires a visa run, new visa category, or exit — not a second TM.7 on the same pattern.
Does extension reset visa exemption “entry count”?
Extension is in-country permission; it does not replace embassy visa strategy for repeated long tourism.
Do children extend the same way?
Minors need parent presence and documents; fees may differ — bring birth certificates if asked.
See the tourist visa hub and extension task guide.
