Short Thailand trips usually start with one of two tourism routes: visa exemption (stamp on arrival) or a pre-approved Tourist Visa (TR) from an embassy. They look similar at immigration but differ in cost, stay length, extension culture, and repeat-entry risk.
Quick comparison
| Visa exemption | Tourist Visa (TR) | |
|---|---|---|
| Application | None before travel (if eligible) | Embassy / consulate before travel |
| Cost | Free at border | Embassy fee (varies by post) |
| Typical air stay | Often 60 days (2026) | Often 60 days per entry |
| Land stay | Often 30 days | Depends on entry stamp |
| Extension | Sometimes 30 days TM.7 | Often one 30-day extension |
| Best for | One-off eligible tourism | Non-exempt passports, planned longer tourism |
When exemption is enough
Choose exemption if your passport is on the MFA list, your stay fits the stamp you expect, and you are not looping entries to simulate residency.

When to apply for TR instead
Consider TR if
- Your nationality is not visa-exempt
- You want embassy-approved tourism before booking flights
- Exemption looping failed or you were denied at border
- You need multiple-entry tourism within visa validity

Extensions for both routes
Provincial Immigration may grant 30-day extensions on TM.7 for eligible stamps — not automatic. Bring passport photos, fee in cash, and sometimes TM.30.
Guide: Extend tourist stay.
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa exemption | 0 THB | At border; officer discretion applies |
| Single-entry TR (embassy) | 1,000–3,000 THB | Local currency at post |
| TM.7 extension | 1,900 THB | Immigration cash guideline |
Neither route allows Thai employment
Tourism permissions are for tourism. Remote work, local jobs, and long intentional stays need DTV, Non-B, or other categories — see visa eligibility.
Visa on Arrival — third option
Limited passports may use VOA at designated airports — separate from exemption. Guide: Visa on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Which gives more days?
Depends on passport and entry point — compare expected stamps, not blog headlines.
Can I switch from exemption to TR inside Thailand?
Sometimes via embassy mail-out or border strategy — plan before overstay. Do not stay illegal.
Does TR guarantee 60 days?
The entry stamp sets days. Visa sticker is permission to request entry.
Repeat trips — exemption or TR?
Long-term looping on either risks denial. Use DTV or proper long-stay visa.
