Visa exemption lets listed nationalities enter Thailand without a prior visa fee — but the stamp you receive defines everything: permitted days, whether extension is possible, and how immigration views your next entry.

Air arrival vs land border

Entry typeTypical stay (listed nationalities from 15 Sep 2026)Notes
International airports30 days (15 days for Seychelles, Mauritius)BKK, DMK, HKT, CNX, etc.
Land borders30 days (same stamp length)Max 2 exemption entries per calendar year for many passports
Officer discretionCan shorten any stampStamp wins over embassy website assumptions

Warning

Do not plan a land-border visa run assuming you will receive the same days as your last flight arrival.

Entry frequency and discretion

Immigration officers have discretion at every border. Published guidance and practice on entries per year under exemption vary. Patterns that look like living in Thailand on repeated tourist entries — back-to-back runs, minimal time abroad — risk denial, shortened stamps, or referral for interview.

Safer long-stay routes:

Extensions on exemption stamps

Some exemption entries can receive a 30-day extension (TM.7) at provincial Immigration — not guaranteed for every stamp. TR holders follow similar extension culture with different starting days.

Visa runs: what actually happens

A visa run is leaving Thailand and re-entering for a new stamp. It is not a legal category. Success depends on officer discretion, your history, funds proof, and onward travel evidence.

Before a land border run

  • Know typical days for that crossing and passport
  • Carry proof of funds and onward travel
  • Accept denial risk — have a backup embassy TR plan
  • Never overstay expecting a same-day fix at the border

TDAC and entry formalities

Air travellers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before immigration — see TDAC guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many exemption entries per year?
From 15 September 2026, land-border exemption entries are generally limited to two per calendar year for many nationalities. Air entries are not subject to the same published cap, but long-term looping still risks denial — use proper visa categories.

Is 30 days guaranteed at the airport?
No. Officers can shorten stays. The stamp is law.

Does leaving by land reset the clock differently than by air?
Each entry gets a new stamp. History follows your passport.

When should I get a TR instead?
When you are not exempt, need longer pre-approved stays, or exemption looping fails.
