Visa on Arrival (VOA) is a paid visa category issued at designated international airports for passports on the VOA list. It is not the same as visa exemption (free stamp for listed nationalities) and not available at every land border.

Info

If your passport qualifies for visa exemption, you usually should not pay for VOA — exemption is the simpler route unless an officer directs otherwise.

Eligible airports

VOA counters operate at major international airports including Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), and Chiang Mai (CNX) — verify signage on arrival; not all minor airports offer VOA.

Documents and fee

Typical VOA file

  • Passport valid at least 6 months
  • Confirmed onward ticket within permitted stay
  • Proof of accommodation or funds (amount per current notice)

Application at the airport

  1. 1

    Follow VOA signs before immigration

Complete form and pay fee at VOA counter if your passport requires it.

  2. 2

    Receive VOA sticker

Then proceed to immigration for entry stamp.

  3. 3

    Photograph stamp

Permitted stay is on passport stamp, not sticker alone.

Complete TDAC before landing if flying.

When embassy TR is better

  • You want certainty before non-refundable hotels
  • Airport VOA queues during peak season
  • Your passport is not on VOA list
  • You need multiple-entry tourism

Frequently asked questions

Can I get VOA at land borders?
Generally no — VOA is airport-focused. Land crossings use exemption or pre-issued visas.

How long can I stay on VOA?
Check current notice — commonly 15 days historically; verify 2026 rules for your passport.

Does VOA allow work?
No. Tourism only.

VOA refused — what now?
Airline may deny boarding abroad if documents fail. Fix file or obtain embassy TR.
