Getting Around Chiang Mai Without a Car

Chiang Mai transport without a car: red songthaews, Grab, bicycles, scooters, airport links, and smoke season tips.

Tree-lined street in a Thai city

Chiang Mai is compact by Bangkok standards. You do not need a car for daily life inside and around the old city — red songthaews, Grab, bicycles, and rental scooters cover most trips. A car adds parking friction in the old moat area and is rarely worth the cost for short stays.

Red songthaew (rod daeng)

Shared pickup trucks run set-ish routes and can be chartered. They are the cheapest regular transport after walking.

Shared ride: Flag down a truck going your direction; fares inside the city are often 30–40 THB per person — confirm before sitting if unsure.
Charter: Agree a flat price before the driver detours for you alone. Night markets and Doi Suthep trips usually need a charter.

Songthaews do not follow Bangkok-style fixed bus maps. Ask your guesthouse which route heads toward Nimman, the airport road, or Hang Dong.

Grab and taxis

Grab (and similar apps) offer upfront pricing — useful at night, in rain, or when you do not speak Thai. Pickup points at malls and the airport are marked.

Meter taxis exist but are less common than Bangkok. Insist on the meter or use Grab to avoid haggling fatigue.

Estimate CNX → city transfers if you are comparing pre-booked vans against Grab.

Bicycle and walking

Inside the old city moat, many errands are walkable or cycleable. Dedicated bike lanes are limited — ride defensively and use lights at night.

Scooter traffic dominates; cyclists are often passed closely. Helmets are strongly advised even when not legally enforced for bicycles.

Scooters and motorbikes

Rentals are cheap and ubiquitous. You need a valid licence your insurer recognises — many travel policies exclude motorbike claims without a motorcycle endorsement.

Checkpoints on the ring road and near tourist areas are routine. Helmet, licence, and registration papers are checked.

Warning

International Driving Permits plus home motorcycle licence are commonly required for insurance to respond. “I rent often” is not a legal or insurance strategy.

Day trips without owning a car

Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon, and craft villages are reachable by charter songthaew, organised tours, or Grab one-way plus return booking. Shared tour vans sell seats at travel agencies — compare safety record and insurance, not only price.

Air quality season (Feb–Apr)

Burning season smoke can make outdoor cycling or long walks unhealthy. Check daily AQI apps; that is a health decision, not a lifestyle preference. Plan indoor coworking or filtered apartments if you stay through March.
