Fighting in Myanmar's Karen State has spilled across the border into Mae Sot district, Tak province. On 29 October 2026, shells and stray bullets from clashes opposite the Thai village of Huai Maha Wong landed on Thai homes and injured a resident. On 30 October, the Thai military suspended imports and exports through unofficial border crossings south of the First Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge until 5 November. If you live in Mae Sot, are visiting Tak province, or were thinking of a border trip to Myawaddy, here is what has been confirmed and what it means for you.

At a glance
- Where: Maha Wan subdistrict (Ban Huai Maha Wong area) in Mae Sot district, opposite Min Let Pan (also spelled Min La Pan) village in Myawaddy township, Myanmar. The Moei River forms the border here.
- What happened: Myanmar military forces and resistance fighters exchanged heavy-weapons fire on 29 October. Drones were reportedly used to drop bombs. Explosions and stray rounds repeatedly crossed into Thai territory.
- Casualties: a 55-year-old Thai woman was hurt by shrapnel when a round hit her home. She was treated at Mae Sot Hospital and is reported to be in a safe condition. A 14-year-old boy was unhurt after a bullet came through his roof.
- Damage: officials surveying Maha Wan found damage to more than 20 homes across three village areas. One house was hit by a mortar round and another by a rocket-propelled grenade that did not explode. Most of the other damage came from small-arms fire hitting rooftops.
- Thai response: the Ratchamanu Task Force fired two warning rounds towards the Myanmar side and reinforced the border. Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered the Tak governor and security agencies to protect residents.
- Trade order: from 30 October to 5 November, imports and exports through unofficial crossing points are suspended in parts of Mae Sot and neighbouring Phop Phra district.
What exactly is suspended
According to The Nation, Maj Gen Prasan Henprasert, commander of the Naresuan Force, sent an urgent written order to the Mae Sot Customs House. It suspends special permission for goods to cross at points outside officially authorised routes. The order covers the area south of the First Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge over the Moei River in Mae Sot and extends into parts of Phop Phra. It runs from 30 October to 5 November 2026.
The army said the measure is meant to strengthen border security and stop supplies reaching any armed group through informal routes. The Nation stresses that it does not amount to a blanket closure of all authorised Thai–Myanmar border crossings.
Prime Minister Anutin said Myanmar's leadership had been informed and warned that Thailand could strengthen its defensive measures if no action was taken. Infantry companies, rapid-response units and long-range reconnaissance teams are patrolling border roads and villages, especially at night.
Background: a tense month on the Moei
This is not an isolated incident. The Thai Army reported stray bullets crossing into Thailand on 26 October from fighting near Ban Mae La Ma Luang. According to DVB, residents in Mae Sot had asked the government for protection the day before the 29 October shelling. The Second Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge at Mae Sot reopened for trade only in late May 2026, after being shut for more than 10 months because of fighting in Myawaddy. The UK government's travel advice notes that the security situation in Myanmar is unpredictable and liable to change without notice.
Earlier incidents in 2026
Stray fire from the Myawaddy fighting has reached Thai villages opposite Min Let Pan several times this year:
- 7 February: gunfire from clashes at Ban Min La Pan crossed into Ban Mae Kon Gen and Ban Huai Maha Wong, according to Thaiger.
- Around 6 July: a 60 mm mortar shell hit a home in Maha Wan subdistrict and was removed by soldiers from the Ratchamanu Task Force. Machine-gun rounds also struck a second house with two people inside. No one was hurt.
- 17 August: stray gunfire again hit houses in Ban Huai Maha Wong. No injuries were reported.
- 22 October: shells struck homes in Ban Mae Khun Kent, Village No. 9 in Mae Sot district, according to Tak MP Chingchai Koprapakit, quoted by Thairath English.
On 29 October Chingchai urged the government to move quickly through diplomatic channels to stop shells crossing into Thailand, and to take safety measures and reassure people living along the border seriously. For anyone living or working in the area, the pattern means the risk does not end when one round of fighting dies down, so keep following the situation.
Help for affected residents and who is on the ground
The commander of the Ratchamanu Task Force visited the injured woman, gave financial help towards her medical treatment and discussed support for repairing her home, Thaiger reported. Mae Sot officials are assessing damage and helping affected households. Security on this stretch of the border involves the Ratchamanu Task Force, Infantry Companies 1431 and 1413, Border Patrol Police Company 346 and village protection volunteers, according to The Nation and Khaosod English. If you work with an organisation that provides aid in the area, coordinate with district officials before going to the riverside.
What it means for expats and travellers
Mae Sot town. Reports so far describe the impact in villages along the river in Maha Wan subdistrict, not the town centre. Daily life in Mae Sot continues, with extra troops and patrols in border areas. If you live or work there, particularly with NGOs, schools or clinics near the river, follow your organisation's security guidance and local announcements.
Border villages. Avoid the riverside villages around Huai Maha Wong and Maha Wan while fighting continues. Village leaders have used loudspeakers to tell residents to go to bunkers or safe areas. If you hear such warnings, follow them immediately.
Border runs and day trips to Myawaddy. Do not plan a trip across to Myawaddy right now. The trade order applies to unofficial crossings, but the fighting is taking place in Myawaddy township itself. Whether foreigners can cross at the Friendship Bridges depends on both the Thai and the Myanmar side, and that can change without notice. In any case, Thailand has been tightening its scrutiny of repeated visa-exempt entries, so a border run is not a reliable way to extend your stay. If your permitted stay is running out, apply for an extension at an immigration office before it expires.
Insurance. Many travel insurance policies exclude areas where a government advises against travel, or events linked to armed conflict. Read your policy before travelling near the border.
Checklist
- Check the news daily before travelling to Mae Sot, Phop Phra or Umphang, and follow Tak provincial and district announcements.
- Keep away from the river border around Maha Wan and do not take photos of military positions.
- Carry your passport or a copy with your visa stamp. Expect extra checkpoints on roads in Tak province.
- Share your plans with someone you trust and register with your embassy if it offers a registration service.
- Keep your phone charged and connected. You may need to receive updates or change plans quickly.
- Know the numbers: 191 for police emergency, 1669 for medical emergency and 1155 for the English-speaking Tourist Police.
- Do not use informal crossings under any circumstances. They are illegal for travellers and now under heightened military watch.
- Do not touch unexploded ordnance. One of the rounds that hit a house on 29 October was a rocket-propelled grenade that did not explode. If you see a shell, grenade or suspicious fragment, keep away, keep others away and call 191.
What to watch next
The trade suspension is due to end on 5 November 2026. Whether it is lifted, extended or widened will depend on the fighting around Min Let Pan. We will update this article if Thai authorities announce changes to authorised crossings or to travel in Tak's border districts.
